Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky (USA). He worked on the farm of his father. He attended school for less than a year, but taught himself to read and write. He did different types of jobs before he settled as a highly successful lawyer.
He was a tall man at 1.93 meters, his wife was Mary Todd Lincoln.
As a lawyer, Lincoln was gradually drawn to politics and became the 16th President of the United States in the year 1861.
Lincoln led the US through its civil war, it’s bloodiest war. The war was over the rights of black people to be free, southern states wanted to separate from the USA and form their own country where slavery of black people would be allowed. While he was successful in that war to keep the USA intact, he was assassinated in April 1865.
Today he is honored with his picture on the $5 bill. He also has a large memorial statue and building in his honor in Washington, DC. If you visit Washington DC, you really should see him.
